A passion for art enveloped my childhood on Evansville's Westside. Art materials and encouragement abounded. Art was God's world, the world of beauty and emotion. As He created us in love, so were we to create works to showcase His natural world. Despite this strong influence, I grew up to become a high school English teacher.
Decades later, I turn to art again. My most loved subject remains the natural world. I am constantly overwhelmed by its lushness and variety, its magic and predictability. My favorite mediums to work in range from water-based and oil paints to textiles and clay. I enjoy combining them to enhance a work's mood and release its voice.
My foray into the art world has two purposes: First, I focus on the importance of value and temperature to create exciting and lush paintings. Light, the enigma of all artists, must always guide my choice of paints and treatment of subject matter. Thematically and more importantly, I endeavor to communicate the inspiration and guidance that we are given through Nature's beauty.
The style of my creations ranges from Impressionistic to Realistic. Lately I have been experimenting with Abstract Expressionism, emphasizing symbol and emotion before reality. No matter the style, all of my works are marked by a richness and a depth of color.
Val Alsop's award winning works may be viewed in competitions and shows throughout the tri-state as well as in Evansville's Bower-Surheinrich Gallery and New Harmony's Hoosier Salon.
