What is Outsider Art?
Art that is created by people outside of the mainstream of society. Outsider art takes in work created by the mentally ill, homeless, disabled, those who have suffered trauma, prison inmates or those in captivity. You will find creative works - paintings, drawings, sculptures and assemblages - by people who have little or no formal training in art and who produce art without regard to the mainstream art world?s recognition, marketplace or definitions. These are people who make art often not recognizing themselves as artists until some collector or expert comes along to inform them that what they are doing is making art.
On this site we offer works of art by talented artists who create from the heart. They do not conform to mainstream artistic philosophies or ideals and reside ‘outside’ the normal constraints of the traditional art establishment. These Outsiders are driven to create, and their art often springs from deep personal convictions. Their issues, as seen through their art, celebrate both the triumphs and tragedies of the human experience.
